This beat covers the large village of Cheddar, reputed home of the famous Cheddar cheese, and the nearby parish of Shipham on the southern slopes of the Mendips.

Cheddar contains the popular tourist attractions of Cheddar Gorge and Cheddar Caves and is especially busy in the summer months and on bank holiday weekends. It is a village which is the size of a small town with a residential population of nearly 5,000.

The area is also popular with walkers and pot-holers and there are a number of local beauty spots.

Partners and Communities Together (PACT) gives you the opportunity to influence what happens in your neighbourhood. It is a mechanism whereby neighbourhood issues, identified through local meetings, are taken to a partnership panel, where courses of action are agreed. Find out more.

If you are unable to attend a meeting but would like to make your views known, please Register your local priorities.

Current public priorities

Agreed 14th April 2010

Concerns raised were of speeding vehicles through the villages and dangerous driving. Concerns have also been raised with regard to boy racers using Cheddar Gorge performing 'doughnuts' and speeding in Upper New Road, The Cliffs, Station Road and Wideatts Road.

All Speedwatch teams on the Cheddar and Shipham Beat are targeting these areas to build and intelligence base to target the main offenders. Police officers and PCSOs from the Cheddar SSN are actively monitoring speed, issuing warnings and where necessary prosecuting offenders. Over the next few months officers will be regularly patrolling these areas and also using Section 59 Warnings to drivers who are driving in an anti-social manner which can also include dangerous driving or excess speed. Vehicles can also be seized using this legislation for persistent offenders.

Officers are collating intelligence and the Cheddar SSN will be reporting at the next PACT meeting.
