Car jacking

Car jacking is not a common problem, but you can reduce the chances of becoming a victim by taking a few simple precautions:

  • Plan your route, avoiding risky areas. Leave your itinerary with someone and text message a contact at the beginning and end of a journey.
  • Regularly text or phone details of your location but remember to do it safely and not whilst driving.
  • Always drive with your windows and doors locked.
  • Regularly check your mirrors and scan ahead for potentially dangerous situations.
  • If you believe that someone has deliberately hit your vehicle from behind go to the nearest police station and do not stop until you feel safe to do so.
  • If your vehicle breaks down keep away from traffic and if possible stay with the vehicle. Use a mobile phone to get assistance. Ensure that you check the identity of uniform personnel from a position of safety.
  • Drive defensively and do not overtly and deliberately display property or wealth.
  • When parking ensure you leave your vehicle in a well lit busy area.
  • When you return to it be aware of your surroundings. Have your keys ready and your mobile handy, charged and in credit.
  • If anyone is acting suspiciously or oddly avoid them and walk to a place of safety.

The most important thing is to protect yourself - your car can be replaced.
