A photograph of a hand about to touch a car door handle containing the text Car crime Cranium Caviar
Impact roadshow

A photograph of a stolen Vauxhall Cavalier SRI that crashed into a tree killing the front seat passenger. The Impact roadshow, a vehicle crime awareness workshop, was set up with the aim of diverting young people away from vehicle-related crime. As part of the roadshow a pack was produced to assist the police when educating people about the dangers of stealing cars and driving at high speeds.

This interactive and innovative pack is now available to anyone who wishes to help reduce vehicle crime and make our roads safer places. It has been developed for use with young people aged 14-15 years (year 10 school pupils). However, its flexibility has allowed it to be used equally successfully with a range of audiences aged 11-25 years, in special schools, youth clubs, clients on probation and inmates in HM Young Offenders Institutes.

It was originally conceived by members of the Avon and Somerset Constabulary Diversion Team as a response to the high levels of involvement in auto-related offending and risk-taking amongst young people.

Research and validation has been carried out by numerous professionals including a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, a Professor of Psychology, Youth Justice officers, Social Workers, Teachers, Probation Officers, Education Welfare Officers and Clinical Psychologists.

This updated pack has been produced by members of the Community Safety Group of the Avon and Somerset Constabulary.

The aim

A photograph of a stolen car that collided with a wall on a left-hand bend. The 19-year-old male in the front passenger seat was killed. To provide a resource, for use with appropriately identified young people, which will seek to reduce crime, offending and road crashes, by heightening awareness of the consequences of involvement in vehicle crime and its effects on others.

NOTE: Punishment is low on the list of priorities. Information sharing with the emphasis on safety and care should be uppermost.

The format

A photograph of a Ford Fiesta XR2 that was broken into two following a head-on collision with a Landrover Discovery. The 19 year-old driver had crossed the double (no overtaking) white lines on a right-hand bend. This pack contains character worksheets, teaching notes, presenter's guide, photographs and a video/DVD, which are designed to provide fastmoving and interactive groupwork. It has been designed for use with groups of between 12 and 30 young people but can also be used in smaller groups.

The format enables great flexibility, allowing the whole programme to be delivered in around one and a half hours or if preferred each section will stand on its own permitting more in-depth discussion.

Video/DVD - containing scene-setter, a BBC news item and nine real-life interviews. There is also other video on speed and seat belts and crash test dummy footage.

Teaching notes - containing all written material necessary to conduct the Roadshow.

Six character worksheets - for photocopying, including an optional evaluation form.

Photographs - 18 in total (four are shown on this sheet). Relevant information can also be found on the rear of each photograph.

'Presenter's guide' - an easy-to-follow guide when presenting the Impact Roadshow which indicates when to show photographs and video clips and when to ask for questions.

This interactive workshop is based on a fictional car crash involving young people and an innocent pedestrian.

This is presented as a BBC news report.

There follows six different character question worksheets of people who directly or indirectly would be involved in a crash like this. Some of the questions used are shown on this sheet. The audience has to complete these question sheets (there are no right or wrong answers), it's their views that are important.

The six characters are: a fire officer, a doctor in A & E, a car owner, a pedestrian, a vehicle examiner and a parent.

Contents

A photograph of the 13-year-old driver of a stolen Montego in Intensive care. He is still recovering from his injuries, he may never walk again and will be left with brain damage for the rest of his life. Examples of questions:

  1. If your family car was stolen how would the theft affect you personally?
  2. Who else could be affected by a stolen car being driven around in the area where you live?
  3. A driver of a stolen car can never be insured. What effects could that have on you if you get into a stolen car for a ride?
  4. When a car is stolen, the steering lock is often damaged. What effect will this have on the control of the vehicle?
  5. How do you think your mother, or someone who cares for you would feel having to identify you in a mortuary if you were killed in a stolen car?

At the end of each section the video shows interviews with six people who have been affected by a crash in real life.

Other video clips include television adverts on speed, the importance of wearing seat belts and crash test dummy footage.

The cost of the Impact Roadshow Pack is £150 plus VAT and p&p.
