The designer approach to reducing crime

The aim of Secured by Design is to encourage the building industry to adopt crime prevention measures in development design to assist in reducing the opportunity for crime, the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour and in creating a safer and more secure environment.

Secured by Design is an award given to the developer, landlord or architect who builds or refurbishes homes, businesses and sheltered accommodation which help meet this aim.

Only those who have built in all reasonable security precautions receive the award, which has been developed by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).

Those achieving the approved standards will be entitled and encouraged to use the official Secured by Design logo (pictured above) for marketing purposes. It is designed to create instant recognition by potential residents that the property has been designed with security and safety in mind.

For more information about this initiative visit www.securedbydesign.com or have a look at the Bristol City Council website.
