What will the Police do?

A photograph of a man being led away in handcuffs by a police officer Our aim, in partnership with other agencies, is to reduce violent crime and the fear of violent crime, through prevention, detection and education, focusing our efforts on domestic and alcohol-related violence.

If you are a victim of domestic abuse we will maintain a victim-focused approach, ensuring that we treat you with sensitivity, care and concern.

Where criminal offences have occurred we will normally arrest the perpetrator and investigate each incident fully. We will ensure that both victims and witnesses feel confident enough to report offences and give evidence in court.

We will prosecute offenders where appropriate and we will also seek other means at our disposal which are effective in preventing further violence.

Domestic Abuse Officers

Avon and Somerset Constabulary has specialist personnel on each district who are aware of the difficulties that you may be facing. They are available for you to speak to about how to stop the violence, either for yourself or another.

Remember, our domestic abuse officers may not always be available immediately, but any of our officers will be able to help you.

You do not actually have to be receiving domestic abuse at the time to speak to any officer. We are here to help you live your life free of fear of violence as well as violence itself. Our officers will be happy to discuss with you any concerns that you may have, and help you in discussing the options available and other agencies that can assist you.

These officers also have details of a range of organisations that can help you in your area. If you are unsure of who you should contact, the domestic abuse officers will be happy to advise you about useful addresses and telephone numbers of organisations near you.

You can contact them by dialling 101 and asking for the Domestic Abuse Officer at whichever station is nearest to you.

In cases of emergency always dial 999.
