Be streetwise when walking or jogging:
- Never hitchhike.
- Avoid walking or jogging alone in remote areas after dark.
- Take sensible precautions if walking alone in the dark. For example, try to stick to well-lit busy streets and be vigilant.
- If you're out and going to be late, think about how you're going to get home. For example, pre-book a taxi or arrange a lift with a friend or family member. Let someone know about your plans - and if they change.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Remember things like MP3 players can be distracting.
- When going to your car or home, have your keys ready at hand.
- Avoid having valuables on display.
- Be discreet when using your mobile phone and put it away from view after use. Keep it on vibrate so as not to attract attention.
- Carry your bag close to your body and (try not to overload yourself with items - only take what you need. Spread your valuables and do not keep then all in one place, for example a handbag.
- Consider carrying a personal attack alarm.
- Be aware of your personal space and be on your guard if someone gets too close.
