Question (Added 13th February 2012)

The total number of reported offences under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 - or the Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act 2009, or the Sexual Offences (Northern Ireland) Order 2008, depending on where in the UK the force is based - as recorded by the force.

Of those please give the total number by year that led to a) an arrest and b) someone being charged

Please give figures for rape and attempted rape, separately from all other sexual offences according to the descriptions in the Home Office codes.

Please also distinguish between victims aged 16 and over, and victims aged under 16.

Please format the data as follows in order to make collation of data from all forces easier (please also send the data, via email, as an Excel file):

Table 1: Rape and attempted rape offences: (Columns) Year, no. of offences, offences leading to arrest, offences leading to charge, no. of offences where victim was aged 15 or under

Table 2: All other sex offences: Year, no. of offences, arrests, charges, no. of offences victim aged 15 or under

Table 3: Total (all sex offences): Year, no. of offences, arrests, charges, no. of offences victim aged 15 or under

Answer

The information you have requested is not all held on the same system therefore it has not been possible to present the information in exactly the way you requested. Recorded crime/ detections are recorded on a separate system to arrest & charge information. The crime information is held in financial year, therefore the information has been provided in that format. All other information is recorded in calendar year. In addition to this, the arrest, charge and victim details are only recorded in a retrievable format from 2006 onward.

In addition, it has not been straightforward to answer the offences involving victims aged 15 or under. Some offences are worded with the victim being between the ages of 13 and 17. However, some offences the wording describes the victim as being over the age of 13 - which could clearly include those aged under 16, so I have included these separately for your information.
