Police Forces in the United Kingdom are routinely required to provide statistics to government bodies and the recording criteria is set nationally. However, the systems used for recording the figures are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the data. It should be noted that for these reasons the figures given relate to information from the specific recording system of the Avon and Somerset Constabulary and should not be used for comparison purposes with any other response you receive.
The below statistics on a year on year basis cannot be compared against each other because it could take many years for a compensation claim to be settled or taken to court i.e. the compensation claim could take place in 2003, however the claim may not be settled until the financial year 2007/08. Prior to 01st April 2001 employer liability claims were not handled by Avon and Somerset Constabulary and some claims dating back to this earlier period were settled during the below years, the figures are therefore incomplete and statistics on a year on year basis cannot be compared against each other for this reason.
