Becoming a Special Constable

A photograph of a special constable being fitted with a uniform As a special constable you will work with and for the community to:

  • help reduce fear of crime and disorder;
  • assist the regular police with their enquiries;
  • develop your personal skills and widen your experience.

Give your life a new dimension

Joining Avon and Somerset Constabulary as a special constable will provide you with a wide range of fresh opportunities and challenges.

Your role may include walking the beat with regular officers and reducing the fear of crime amongst members of the public by offering crime prevention advice.

You could also find yourself performing many of the tasks that a regular officer would undertake - from road policing duties to talks at local schools.

You may also be involved with more difficult situations such as burglaries, public disturbances, fights and road traffic collisions.

Special Constables are valuable members of our constabulary who provide a vital link between the police and the community. They play an active role in problem-solving policing.

Have you ever thought about really giving something back to your community?

Then why not join the 400-strong team of special constables who work with their regular colleagues to reduce crime and the fear of crime across Avon and Somerset Constabulary.

As a special constable you will play a crucial role in forging stronger, hand-in-hand partnerships with the community.

You will be helping to answer the needs of the public by offering the reassurance of highly visible uniformed police officer patrols.
