of the consequences of the strategies employed to keep the UK public safe?
- Mediation, its benefits to the BPA and the Police Service (Facilitators: Karpaul Siotha and Kirk Dawes)
Mediation is a process used to resolve disputes. It is a voluntary non-binding process which addresses the root cause of conflict or tension. In this workshop
we will explore the benefits that the mediation process can bring to the relationship between the BPAs and the Police Service.
- Black Minority Ethnic Communities (BME), Young People and the Judicial System (Facilitators: Anesta Weekes QC and Peter Herbert QC)
Gang activities and violence are manifesting themselves in many communities, placing BME communities and young people in adversity with the judicial system.
What are some of the consequences? Are there any early interventions that can be used to prevent young people sliding into criminality?
- Progression of BME Police Employees (Facilitator: NSCAS Team, Home Office)
Black minority ethnic police officers account for three point seven per cent of the Service and police staff seven per cent. However the percentage of those in positions of power
or decision making, stands at two point two per cent. In this workshop we will explore what is being done to ensure a better future for the under-represented. We will look at
the work of the National Senior Careers Advisory Service (NSCAS) and the High Potential Development Scheme (HPDS).
- History of the UK Slave Trade (Facilitator: Mr Jonathan Morley, Macmillan Press)
2007 marks the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade. In this workshop we will look at some facts about the use of slave labour to build the economy of the UK.
- Guns and gangs in our community (Facilitators: Mr Steve Tyler SCD8 Trident and Mr Glen Williams NBPA)
In recent years we have experienced a rise in guns and gangs in our communities resulting in several killings by and of young black youths. What are the strategies
being used by the Police Service to combat these incidents?
- 'Honour' based violence in our community (Facilitator: Mussurut Zia, Lancashire Constabulary)
A 15 year old Asian female was forced into marriage. When she fled this marriage to be with someone of her own choice she was murdered by her mother and brothers.
This workshop will look at the largely unreported crime in our community.
- The effective BPA (Facilitators: Mr Ravi Chand and Mr Everett Henry)
This workshop will assist you in evaluating the effectiveness of your BPA. It will explore ways of making the BPA movement self sufficient, including members' contributions
to the overall aim and objectives of the organisation.
