The Prosecutions Department comprises the following:

Prosecutions Teams – Bristol, Avon & Taunton.

The prosecutions teams are responsible for the administration of prosecution files through the Magistrates' Court system. This includes inputting data to ensure summonses are issued, sending summonses out with supporting statements and liaise with station-based colleagues to arrange personal delivery where necessary. The teams also provide the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) with files for court each day, carrying out requested actions after court and updating files accordingly.

Youth Justice.

The Youth Justice team is responsible for providing advice and guidance to police officers dealing with youth offenders throughout the force area. They are also responsible for ensuring all Youth Offending Teams (YOTS) are notified of youths dealt with by the Police. The team makes sure all local and statutory obligations are fulfilled and ensure that there is consistency throughout the force in decision-making for youth offenders.


Tape Summary and Typing Bureau.

The Tape Summary and Typing Bureau are responsible for responding to requests for typing of witness statements and for producing records of taped interviews. These make up an essential element of a prosecution file.


Tape Library & Registry.

The Tape Library team is responsible for the receipt and storage of tape cassettes of interviews with suspects across the force and for providing copies as required.


Registry staff are responsible for the delivery of post throughout the Criminal Justice Department.


Critical Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) team.

The CICA team is responsible for receiving, recording and responding to requests from the authority for details of crimes committed throughout the force area.
