Max, the retired Avon and Somerset police dog is
making his TV debut on August 14 at 9.00pm. He will be featured in the series Animal Crackers on SKY channel 525, so make sure you tune in and show your support.
Since appearing in November 2007’s newsbeat retired police dog Max has become something of a canine celebrity.
Max was featured because he was using a set of wheels to help him walk again after developing arthritis.
Inspector Mike Ashwin, who has looked after the former drugs dog since his retirement in 2006, said: "Since appearing in Newsbeat Max has caught the attention of the media.
"He has been busy appearing in just about every newspaper across the UK and news internet sites.
"We have received numerous emails from all over the world.
"This is great news because it has raised the issue of re-homing working dogs, especially those with disabilities.
"Max obtained his wheels from Doggon Wheels, A UK-based internet company which takes great care in finding out whether a ‘chariot’ is the right thing for a dog with leg problems.
"They have received numerous enquiries as a result of max.”
But helping Max enjoy a well-earned retirement does not stop with his wheels.
Mike explained: "he enjoys weekly sessions of hydrotherapy at Aqua Dogs in Feniton, Devon.
"Each session lasts about 30 minutes followed by a rub down and some tasty liver treats.
"Hydrotherapy isn’t cheap but anyone thinking about for rehabilitation after an illness may be covered by their pet insurance.
"It can also be used for general fitness and just for fun. The advantage over a river or lake is both the control and temperature of the water.
"For rehabilitation purposes the water must be warm in order for the muscles to work properly.
"Max really enjoys his outings to the pool and starts to whine as soon as we get off the motorway a few miles from it.
"His next challenge is preparing for filming for Animal planet for Sky TV who are interested in his swimming and wheels."
