Police staff are not police officers but staff who assist officers
in the day-to-day running of the department, undertaking a raft of administration
duties and other roles. In Operations they aim to work as a team to provide
continuity of service regardless of the movement of officers.
Ops Planning - Support staff assist with pre-planned and spontaneous
operations: visiting VIPs, royalty and Permanent Operational Orders for
contingency planning. They are heavily involved in 'set piece' operations
such as the Glastonbury Festival, providing constantly updated information,
maps etc. and the collation of all involved resources. Support Staff from
Operational Planning (together with members from other departments) assist
with feeding from the Unit's mobile kitchen which supplies food for staff
at emergency incidents.
Roads Policing Unit - A small group of staff provide administrative support,
dealing with correspondence and telephone calls from members of the public,
outside agencies and officers themselves.
Operations Support - Grooms and kennel maids work at the Mounted and
Dog Section and of course there is a wide variety of paperwork, meetings
and general organisation needed to ensure the smooth running of this section
as well as Support Group vans and Air Operations.
In addition the Operations Department is heavily involved in a continuous
programme of training for all its officers. The provision of training
packs and evolvement of new training plans as needs and legislation become
apparent is an important and essential part of support staff work.
