Road Policing is performed by Specially trained Officers who are part of the Operations Department Response teams based at Almondsbury (outside Bristol), Taunton, Weston-super-Mare, Radstock, and Yeovil.
The main aims of Road Policing Officers are the reduction in casualties and denying Criminals the use of roads . In doing so supporting Avon and Somerset Constabulary to provide the highest levels of confidence in the delivery of Policing, making the Communities of Avon and Somerset feel safe and be safe.
Road Policing Patrol cars are equipped with the latest Automatic Number Plate Recognition Equipment which identifies vehicles which are subject of Criminal Intelligence and/or are being driven outside current Traffic Legislation.
Working along side the Road Policing Officers a Collision Investigation Unit (CIU) exists to manage investigations into all Road Deaths and Life threatening collisions. The specially trained team attends the scene of all such incidents, where, amongst other things, they use the latest technology to examine scenes and vehicles in order to reconstruct the collision and establish what happened. Detailed Reports are produced which can be used for the Coroner and potential prosecutions.
Avon and Somerset Constabulary was the first to develop the idea of family liasion officers (FLOs) who, in addition to their daily duties, volunteer to act as the prime link between the Collision Investigation Unit and the family of road death victims.
