The Avon and Somerset Constabulary pioneered the Family Liaison Officer scheme,
which came into operation in August 2000.
The aim was to provide the families of those killed in road traffic collisions
with the help, advice and information needed. It is a support service which
commences as soon as next of kin can be traced and follows through to the
completion of court proceedings.
They act as a liaison between the investigating team and the family, providing
them with a single point of contact with the police.
The FLOs are all experienced members of the Road Policing Unit who have
volunteered to undertake this demanding role.
Here are a few examples of the service they provide:
Transport to visit the scene (at an appropriate
time).
Contact with support agencies.
Explanation of official procedures.
Information on the progress of the investigation.
If you have suffered a bereavement, our
useful links
page has details of other websites that provide help and support.
