The Avon and Somerset Constabulary is committed to the target of reducing fatalities
and serious injury on the roads by 40% by 2010.
However, even if this is achieved, the risk of death or injury on the
road will still be higher than that in almost any other activity and
certainly much higher than that from violent crime.
Here are a few facts to put some perspective on the scale of the problem:
In 2001, 107 people died on the roads of Avon and Somerset. Nationally,
over 3,000 people were killed.
In the same year, there were 559 serious collisions in the force area,
in which 901 people were injured.
90% of the families of those killed or seriously injured experienced
a significant and permanent decline in their quality of life.
Improving road safety and reducing these figures requires a co-ordinated,
partnership approach.
