| Somerset Community Speed Watch Aide Memoire |
 |
|
The primary role of the CSW volunteer is to monitor and record vehicle speeds and registration numbers. Volunteers should refrain from any action,
verbal or demonstrative, that may bring the activities of CSW into disrepute. This aide memoire has been produced jointly by the Avon and Somerset
Constabulary and members of Somerset CSW teams to assist CSW volunteers. It should be read in conjunction with the current Code of Practice (CoP)
by all volunteers.
- Do not block the right of way of pedestrians or obscure the vision of drivers.
- Be fully visible to drivers of vehicles.
- Only point the speedguns at vehicles that you consider to be speeding.
- Avoid eye contact with drivers.
- Do not squeeze the radar speedgun trigger until the gun is in the aim position. Once a speed reading has been obtained the speedgun must be held steady
for three seconds before releasing the trigger and noting the speed recorded.
- If there is any doubt as to the speed of a vehicle then do not report it.
- Treat all vehicles the same irrespective of whether or not you know the driver.
- Do not gesticulate at or verbally abuse drivers.
- Avoid heated discussions with drivers. Break off the CSW if intimidation and/ or abuse become excessive and report this to Avon and Somerset Constabulary
Force Service Centre. Dial 999 if immediate police attendance is required. (CoP 2f refers).
- Never pass personal details to occupants of vehicles.
- Act on the advice of the RPU and your Beat Manager. If you want them to attend your CSW then you must advise them in advance (CoP 2j refers).
