The following looks at one problem-solving approach through a Community Speed Watch.
- The aim of the speed watch would be to reduce the real or perceived dangers caused by speeding, and achieve a reduction in the number of speeding
motorists by five per cent in a 12 month period.
- Community Speed Watch schemes aim to share the responsibilities for monitoring and addressing speed related offending between the community, the
police, and fire service.
- Schemes consist of active local members of the community joining to monitor speeds at safe locations with speed monitoring equipment. The scheme
is supported by your local Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT), Road Policing Unit, Fire Service, Local and Parish Councils.
- Each location suggested will be assessed for suitability and ultimately the safety of the volunteers, and other road users.
- Any vehicle travelling at 36mph or above in a 30mph limit, or 47 mph or above in a 40mph limit, can be recorded on a daily activity sheet, and forwarded
on to the scheme coordinator, who will then forward to the necessary administrative authority, who in turn sends out relevant warning letters to the
registered keeper of the offending vehicle.
- Each group will be covered by the Police Authority Insurance, as long as the training given is adhered to.
