"Traffic Management" is an engineering term used to describe measures on
the highway to regulate traffic flow and driver behaviour in order to
improve road safety.
The Traffic Management and Road Safety Unit is a team of eight, both
police and support staff, based at Police Headquarters, who deal with
all aspects of road safety, the movement of abnormal loads within the
force area, data collection and interpretation, time trials and road
races.
They respond to formal consultations on traffic management issues; to
informal consultation from local authorities and to correspondence from
members of the public.
The unit ensures that the force has a consistent approach to road safety
issues across the many local authority areas it covers. Their
remit covers many aspects, from measures such as new speed limits, traffic
calming schemes and the like, to such things as road works and defective
road furniture or markings.
Road safety is the overriding consideration behind any decision made
by the unit regarding the introduction of traffic management features
on the highway. The likely results on traffic congestion must also be
taken into account, as must the enforcement implications.
