Training is divided into STAGES. These Stages are then divided into MODULES and the modules are then sub-divided into ELEMENTS.
There are three main driving stages:
Stage 1 - Basic Driver Authorisation
Basic driving is the first level of police driving. Successful candidates will be allowed to drive appropriate police vehicles for enquiries or other such
routine purposes.
This authority allows the candidate to drive within speed restrictions and traffic laws ONLY.
Basic Police Driving is available for cars (police officers and police staff) and motorcycles (basic rider).
Stage 2 - Standard Driver Authorisation
To train police officers to a recognised higher standard than that of the Driving Standards Agency (DSA). Officers are instructed in the principles
of Roadcraft, the Highway Code and Human Aspects of Policing Driving and by so doing, equipping them with the requisite operational skills to fulfil their
role as a sector car driver. This training involves "emergency response" and possibly "initial pursuit" driving techniques.
Upon completion officers should be able to demonstrate the correct attitude to risk taking, be able to differentiate between good and bad driving
behaviour and through their driving, set an example to the general public.
Standard Police Driving is available for cars and motorcycles.
Stage 3 - Advanced Driver Authorisation
The skills required for "advanced driving" are fundamentally the same as for Stage 2 "standard driving", but the higher speeds involved make greater demands on the student.
It is therefore vital to reinforce the training of police officers in the principles of Roadcraft, the Highway Code and Human Aspects of Police Driving theory in order that they
are better able to demonstrate the correct attitude to risk taking, differentiate between good and bad driving behaviour and drive safely when engaged in pursuit management.
Advanced Driver Training is available for cars and motorcycles.
