Officers On Long Term Mental Health Related Sickness

Question

1. Number of officers signed off on long-term sickness due to mental health in 2015, 2016, 2017 and up to now in 2018.

2. Is there a certain amount of time that first responders to terrorist incidents are given off? If so, how long is required and what is the returning back to work policy? More specifically, incidents such as the Manchester Arena bombing, West Minster Bridge attack, London Bridge attack, Finsbury Park and Parsons Green.

3. Finally, was there a certain amount of time that first responders were given off for the Grenfell Tower fire? If so, how long and what was the returning back to work policy?

Answer

We are committed to creating a working environment where the health and wellbeing of our officers and staff is a priority. We have a number of approaches for supporting health and wellbeing in place, including:

  • An internal peer support network specifically for the mental wellbeing of staff.
  • A free 24/7, 365 day a year employee assistance programme so officers and staff can access counselling and advice services direct.
  • An in-house Occupational Health service.
  • A peer led Trauma Risk Management (TRiM) Programme implemented to provide support and assistance to colleagues in the aftermath of a traumatic event.
  • A chaplaincy service providing confidential pastoral support.
  • 7 Point Promise in response to assault on officers ensuring that they receive the support they need.

2. There is no specific policy that defines the amount of time in which officers are given off after responding to certain incidents. In such cases, decisions would be made on an individual basis.

3. No information is held. Avon and Somerset Police did not sent any first responders to this incident.
