Cyber Threats

Question

In the last three years, how many of the following cyber threats have been reported to your force:

Webcam manager:  where criminals take over a webcam.

File hijacker: where criminals hijack files and hold them to ransom

Keylogging: where criminals record what you type on your keyboard

Screenshot manager: allows criminals take screenshots of your computer screen

Phishing: bogus emails asking for security information and personal details

Ad clicker: allows a criminal to direct a victim’s computer to click a specific link

If the above are not logged under specific crime codes, please use the terms in bold above as search terms.

I would like the totals for each cyber threats mentioned above broken down separately.

Please also break these totals down by calendar year for: 2013, 2014, and 2015.

Please note: the information I have requested relates to the number of crimes recorded, not necessarily the number of crimes solved.

However, if you do hold information for the numbers of crimes solved (or the number of crimes which include the search terms above), please also supply this for the last three calendar years.

Answer

A search of our systems for recorded crimes with a tag of ‘cyber crime’, where the terms, ‘Webcam manager’, ‘File hijacker’, ‘Keylogging’, ‘Screenshot manager’, ‘Phishing’ and ‘Ad clicker’ have been used in the MO (Modus Operandi). The search has revealed one record from 2014 which mentions ‘phishing’.

In addition, Avon and Somerset Constabulary can neither confirm nor deny that it holds any other information with regard to an exempt body as the duty in Section 1(1)(a) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 does not apply by virtue of the following exemption:

Section 23(5) Information supplied by or concerning certain Security Bodies.

Confirming or denying the existence of whether any other information is held would contravene the constrictions laid out within Section 23 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 in that this stipulates a generic bar on disclosure of any information applied by, or concerning, certain Security Bodies.
