Dangerous Dogs Seized


  1. I would like to know the number of dangerous dogs seized, number of attacks      reported and the number of dogs destroyed in Somerset since May 1, 2013 to the current date, please.
  2. I would also like to know how many of the above dogs were seized because they were suspected banned breeds, and how many were seized because of their dangerous behaviour.
  3. In addition, please tell me how many people were charged under the Act following these seizures, and how many of the dogs were returned to their owners with no further action taken.
  4. If it is possible to have a breakdown of the date and place that these incidents took place,


Q1. Since 1st May 2013 to 31st May 2016 we have recorded a total of 278 crimes and incidents under the classification of ‘Owner or person allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control, injuring any person or assistance dog’.

A total of 10 dogs were seized in Somerset. Four of these dogs were destroyed. Please note that a dog will only be destroyed by order of the court and this is done humanely.

Q2. Of the 10 dogs, six were seized as they were a banned breed and four were seized due to dangerous behaviour.

Q3. A total of eight people were charged.

Of the 10 dogs seized, six were returned to their owners.
