Seized Firearms

How many firearms have been seized by Avon and Somerset Constabulary in the past 12 months?

If there is any other information you feel is important to give a fuller picture then please include them.

In order to answer your question, we have included seizures of both shotguns (that discharge shot) and rifled barrelled weapons (that discharge bullets).

There are a number of reasons for seizures of guns including those used in crime, or those recovered which may or may not have been used in crime. For example:

  • Guns surrendered by licence holders (e.g. for scrap)
  • Guns seized from licence holders due to unstable domestic situation (these guns may be returned on review or may lead to revocation )
  • Revocation of firearm or shotgun certificates
  • Licensed guns recovered from deceased estate
  • Unlicensed guns found following death of family member
  • Guns seized or surrendered due to licence expiry

Between April 2015 and April 2016 Avon and Somerset Constabulary have seized 223 shotguns and 94 rifled barrelled weapons. The majority would have been seized from a licenced source for a genuine reason.
