Hate Crime Offences Broken Down by Motivator Between 1st June-31st July 2016

Could I please request the number of incidents reported to Avon and Somerset police as "hate offences" from the 1st June 2016 to 31st July 2016? Could you also break the figures down by hate crime flag, such as race or sexual orientation, as well as whether the alleged offenders were charged or not?

In the period 1st June to 31st July there were 707 crimes flagged as motivated by Hate. Of these, 137 have no further information to enable us to place them into a category.

Please find a breakdown below for the number of crimes which have been flagged as being motived by Racial, Religious, Homophobic, Transgender or Disability.  As crimes can be flagged with multiple motivators the following are a count of flags in the period.

Over the past two years, we have seen an increased level of reports of hate crime. As more victims feel confident about coming forward to report incidents, we expect these levels in Avon and Somerset to continue to increase. For us, that’s a tangible demonstration of their belief in us to tackle crime and bring offenders to justice.

The investigation around this type of crime is victim orientated. It is essential that when victims contact us that they can be confident that the investigation will take in to account what they want to happen and the outcome they are seeking.  We will support victims unequivocally from the point they report a crime and throughout the entire length of the investigation.

There is never an excuse for hate crime in any shape or form and this criminality will not be tolerated.

We promise to continue to work together with our partner agencies every day to make the communities of Avon and Somerset be safe and feel safe. More than ever we want those who are victims of hate crime to feel confident in the belief that we’ll take their reports seriously and make sure they get all the support they need.
