Reports of Hate Crime Post Brexit in South Gloucestershire

Question

Reported hate crime in South Gloucestershire.

There have been national reports on increases in hate crime post Brexit vote, I have seen an open letter for the constabulary and the crime commissioner and the Home office have announced measures to fight hate crime. I would like to enquire about hate crime in South Gloucestershire. Have figures been collected for this area of the constabulary and are the figures publicly available?

Clarification received 27th July 2016:

I would like to be able to compare reports of hate crime since Brexit with the same period last year

Could you please provide the number of reported hate crimes between 24 June 2016 – 23 July 2016 and for 24 June 2015 – 23 July 2015.

Ideally I would like them for South Gloucestershire. It would be useful to have the figures for the whole of the constabulary to be able to compare.

Answer

Over the past two years, we have seen an increased level of reports of hate crime. As more victims feel confident about coming forward to report incidents, we expect these levels in Avon and Somerset to continue to increase. For us, that’s a tangible demonstration of their belief in us to tackle crime and bring offenders to justice.

The investigation around this type of crime is victim orientated. It is essential that when victims contact us that they can be confident that the investigation will take in to account what they want to happen and the outcome they are seeking.  We will support victims unequivocally from the point they report a crime and throughout the entire length of the investigation.

There is never an excuse for hate crime in any shape or form and this criminality will not be tolerated.

We promise to continue to work together with our partner agencies every day to make the communities of Avon and Somerset be safe and feel safe. More than ever we want those who are victims of hate crime to feel confident in the belief that we’ll take their reports seriously and make sure they get all the support they need.

Please see the table below for the total number of recorded crimes flagged as a hate crime. Please note that this includes all types of hate crime including race, religion, homophobic, transgender and disability motivated.
