1. The number of children (under 18) detained under s136 of the Mental Health Act and held in a police cell in 2015-2016
2. The number of children (under 18) detained under s136 of the Mental Health Act between 1st January 2015 and March 2016. Please provide detail of where each child was held (for example, a police cell/A&E) and how long they were held.
3. In these cases, how many times did the police record the use of force on the young person?
In relation to questions 1 and 2, no young people under the age of 18 have been detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act and held in a police cell from January 2015 to March 2016.
Since May 2015, police custody was no longer an option available as a place of safety for under 18’s detained under the Mental Health Act. The policy is now to always use a hospital (Section 136 Suite or other). In relation to young adults held anywhere else other than a police cell, this information is not held as it is not currently recorded on Avon and Somerset Police systems, although this is in the process of being addressed.
For information in relation to non-police cell detentions, you may wish to contact the Avon and Wiltshire Partnership NHS Trust and the Somerset Partnership NHS Trust as they may be able to assist you. I have provided links to their contact pages for reference.
Question number 3 is not applicable.
