Reports of drink "spiking"

Question

1. Can you provide annual totals of the number of reports the force received of a person having their drink ‘spiked’ from 2010 to the end of 2015?

2. Can you provide annual totals of the number of arrests for 'spiking' a drink from 2010 to the end of 2015? (If there are no specific records of this, then please provide data for the most relevant offence).

Answer

Police Forces in the United Kingdom are routinely required to provide statistics to government bodies and the recording criteria is set nationally. However, the systems used for recording these figures are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the data. It should be noted that for these reasons the figures given relate to information from the specific recording system of Avon and Somerset Constabulary and should not be used for comparison purposes with any other response you receive.

This offence would fall under the HO code of ‘08/2 - Administering poison with intent to injure or annoy’. We have reviewed the methods of each record and the figures below relate to where ‘spiked drinks’ were mentioned. With regards to the arrest data, on our custody system there is not a specific office of spiking a drink, therefore we have conducted a search where the term has been used in describing the circumstances of arrest.

Please note that in 2015 awareness sessions were held in relation to this type of offence, accounting for the increase in crimes recorded.
