We use the National Specials Recruit Assessment Process which is a rigorous and standardised selection process involving the observation of your performance across a variety of exercises, assessing your potential to perform the role of a Special Constable.
Assessments are made based on what you do and how you do it. Trained assessors evaluate your performance in exercises which relate to specific competency areas relevant to the role. Information from all of the exercises is used to produce the final results. All candidates undertake the same exercises and are assessed on an equal basis.
We are continuously open for Specials recruitment and the process can take 9 to 12 months to complete. The process is outlined below:
If successful at stage 1 you will be invited to a local familiarisation event; here you will be provided with further information about the role, have the opportunity for a Q&A session with Special Constables and if you wish to proceed, an application form will be issued with a closing date for return.
Following successful shortlisting of your application you will be invited to an assessment centre - this consists of a written exercise, competency based interview and situational judgement test. Assessment centre dates for 2017 are currently planned for the following dates:
Saturday 16th September 2017
Saturday 14th October 2017
Saturday 9th December 2017
If successful at stage 3 you will be invited to attend a fitness test, a medical and biometric vetting which consists of fingerprints and DNA. Following vetting and reference checks, applicants will then be offered a place on a training course.
Please note: Applications will be considered from applicants living outside of the Constabulary area. In addition to the normal selection process candidates will be assessed on their ability to commit to and perform the role of Special Constable within Avon and Somerset Constabulary.
