Coronavirus (COVID-19): the policing response and what you need to know

Physical Assaults on Police Employees Since 2015/16

Date of request: June 7, 2018
Reference: 769/18

Request

  1. How many attacks on police officers have there been? –
  2. If possible, could I get details of the attack (if that isn’t available, don’t worry) – Please could I get a breakdown for the figures, separately, for the years 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 (so far)?

Clarification received

On the 21st June you clarified that with regard to details of the attack you wanted “any more detail about the attack (e.g. attacked with a knife),” and that you were requesting “a breakdown of how many attacks there have been on police officers for the years 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Response

Please find the number of physical assaults both on and off duty broken down by year below:

Cohort
Year Officers Specials Staff Total
2015/16 163 4 10 177
2016/17 250 4 10 264
2017/18 359 9 27 395

Any further detail in relation to these would be recorded within each individual assault and would require a manual review of these; this would attract the section 12 cost of compliance exemption.
