Coronavirus (COVID-19): the policing response and what you need to know

Jamie, Control Room trainer

Jamie is a Control Room trainer delivering the control room operator course to new dispatchers.

Jamie joined Avon and Somerset Police as a dispatcher in the control room and now works in the training department.

His time as a dispatcher gave him a thorough understanding of the demands and skills required to be a successful emergency communications operator and the experience has helped shape the way he delivers the training.

Jamie really enjoys the classroom environment. “It can sometimes be thought of as intimidating or a bit daunting, especially if you have not been in a classroom for a while. However this couldn’t be further from reality. I encourage a relaxed training environment. There are lots of laughs and jokes and the student led activities and practical exercises make for fun learning.”

“At times the training can be quite intense as there is a lot of information to learn. One of the favourite parts of my job is when the students pass the assessments successfully, knowing that I have helped them gain the knowledge required to pass these assessments gives me a real sense of satisfaction”.

People join from all groups, ages and backgrounds, which means each course is different from the last. Each offers a new opportunity to help develop and support amazing people into their careers with us.
