Neighbourhood Sergeant Terry Murphy said: “Please make sure your home is secure at night as well as when you go out. Remember to turn the key, as some types of door might seem to be locked when you lift the handle, but could still be opened by a burglar.

“It’s important to take the keys out of the lock and keep them safely out of sight. I’d also recommend setting the alarm at night, if you have one, and joining Neighbourhood Watch.”

PS Murphy urged residents to report any suspicious incidents as they happen, calling 999 if someone’s obviously trying to break in, otherwise passing on information through 101.
