Celebrating National Specials Weekend

This weekend was National Specials Weekend, celebrating the contribution made by Special Constables to police forces up and down the country.

Special Constables are all volunteers, dedicating from four hours a week of their time to working with their local police force.  They carry out many of the same duties as our regular police officers from tackling anti-social behaviour, to assisting at the scenes of accidents and crowd control at major events

In Avon and Somerset we have 321 Special Constables who support our police officers across the region every week.  Our Specials come from all walks of life and all offer different skills and experiences but are united in their desire to give something back to their local communities.

Our Special Constables are regularly out and about across our local communities and this weekend was no exception with a total of 657 hours being recorded between Friday and Sunday.  Here are just some of the things they were got up to:

  • Providing reassurance to passengers and visitors at Bristol Airport
  • Taking part in the Big Lunch at Page Park, Staple Hill
  • Carrying out OpTonic drink driving checks in Somerset
  • Attending a RTC in Washford
  • Joining our colleagues from South Wales Police to support UEFA Champions League Final
  • In Somerset West, Specials detained three people in Bridgwater, one person in Williton/ Minehead and seized drugs in Wellington
  • 40 vehicles were stopped as part of Operation Tonic
