Caravans on the Highway

As many of the local residents are aware, Glastonbury has a large amount of occupied caravans on the public highways.  There are a number of reasons why people are living this way, some out of choice and others because they cannot find anywhere else to go.  The local Neighbourhood Police Team work closely with Somerset Council and other agencies to support these people.

We are aware that some of the caravans are causing an obstruction and some people see them as an eyesore.  For those that are causing an obstruction they are dealt with by Somerset Council, this is quite a long process as there are certain procedures that need to be done.

Unfortunately the Police do not have the power to move the caravans.

If you are concerned about anyone or any of the caravans please contact Somerset Council on 0300 123 2224.

Actions

  • 9 February 2025

There have been a number of movements within the caravan dwellers community.  Several vehicles and vans have moved from the Darch Oil site and this has now been secured, this was due to Somerset Council getting a possession order from the Courts.  Some of those caravans have now moved onto the Beckery Resource Centre, which is also owned by Somerset Council, this land was about to be sold on, so Somerset Council are again seeking a possession order from the Courts.
