Coronavirus (COVID-19): the policing response and what you need to know

‘Romance Scam’

Victims of romance fraud are often vulnerable due to loneliness.  Statistics show they are predominantly female aged between 50-59yrs old but happens to men too. Often victims refuse to believe they are a victim of fraud because of the trust and bond they have with the suspect.

The suspect targets the victim and feigns romantic intentions towards them. A period of grooming takes place, often lasting months, to gain the victims trust and form a bond. They use the nature of the relationship to start obtaining money or sensitive information from the victim. Some victims unwittingly act as money mules receiving money from other victims.
