Offences mentioning GROK august 2025- 13 January 2026

Date of request: 13 January 2026
Reference: 13423320

Request

I am interested in the period from 1 August 2025 to the present, which reflects when the platform ‘Grok’ began to be used in contexts relevant to safeguarding and potential criminal misuse, including image generation.

Please treat the following as separate but related requests:

1) Recorded offences mentioning ‘Grok’
For offences recorded by your force during this period, please state the number of crime reports in which the free-text field (sometimes described by forces as the modus operandi or MO field) contains a mention of the word ‘Grok’.
Please provide a breakdown by offence type.

2) Redacted free-text crime report entries
For the same period, please provide redacted copies of the relevant free-text crime report entries in which ‘Grok’ is mentioned.
I am not requesting personal data. Any information identifying individuals may be redacted as necessary.

3) Use of Grok in connection with recorded offences
Please state whether your force holds any information indicating that ‘Grok’ was used to facilitate, generate, alter or share material relevant to a recorded offence during this period.
Where such information is held, please state how many offences this relates to and, where possible, provide a breakdown by offence category (for example, sexual offences, indecent images, harassment, malicious communications, fraud).

Response

Avon and Somerset police have completed a text search within the summary and MO field for the word ‘Grok’ between 01 August 2025 and 11 January 2026.

While we have provided this information as requested, please note that results based on key word searches can be misleading and the data they produce do not constitute a reliable basis from which to draw wider conclusions.  This is because the terms may appear within the record for any number of reasons, regardless of how relevant they are to the incident itself.  Equally, incidents that may in fact be related to the subject of a request would not be included in results if the specific search terms were not recorded.

This is demonstrated in our search for ‘Grok’. We have identified one occurrence with the word ‘grok’ in it. This was then manually reviewed due to the low number. It is quite clear that this is a typing error and should say ‘from’ in the context in which it is written. As the search identified the word ‘Grok’ not in relation to the platform, no information is held in relation to this request.
