Dog sedation policy
Avon and Somerset Police (ASP) Dog Section assist colleagues and partnership agencies throughout Avon and Somerset in the seizure of dangerous dogs as defined by the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
The use of sedation is one of the tactics available to ASP, when faced with having to manage or handle a dangerous or potentially dangerous dog. Other options include and range from use of physical restraint to firearms.
Sedation enables dogs to be safely transported to a kennel facility or veterinary practice, reducing the risk of injury to the public, police officers and additionally reducing potential stress and injury to the animal.
