Hate crime procedure

This procedure defines hate crime and what can happen to offenders. It also outlines what we do with reports and how we can support victims.

A hate crime is when someone is hurt or treated badly because of who they are, such as their race, religion, disability, gender identity, or who they love.

How will we handle hate crime reports?

Avon and Somerset Police:

  • take reports of hate crimes and incidents very seriously
  • listens carefully to the person who reports it and tries to help and protect them
  • has officers who are trained to be kind, fair, and respectful to everyone
