Illegal drugs overdose response procedure

We, along with the Great Western and South Western Ambulance NHS Trusts, want to allay fears of calling 999 to report illegal drug overdoses.

Avon and Somerset Police will NOT attend the scenes of suspected illicit drug overdoses unless:

  • there is a death, serious injury, or circumstances where the ambulance crew believe death may follow due to drugs use
  • there is evidence of harm arising to children or other vulnerable persons, such as a person who is in the care of the subject and who may need further support
  • the ambulance crew is at risk as a result of a potentially violent situation, or if they are attending an address that is known, or believed, to represent a risk to them
