Being a Police Officer

As a police officer, you will work in partnership with the communities you serve to maintain law and order, protect members of the public and their property, prevent crime, reduce the fear of crime and improve the quality of life for all citizens. You will use a range of technology to protect individuals, identify the perpetrators of crime and ensure successful prosecutions against those who break the law.

We officer a starting salary of £20,880 with 22 paid days of annual leave  (increasing to 30 days) plus public holidays and a competitive pension scheme. We also consider applications for flexible working, part time and job share. You’ll get training, leadership and development opportunities throughout your career and the chance to progress across a number of areas including community policing, dog handling and specialist investigations once you have completed your initial training.

Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship

From September 2019, completing a Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) is the only entry route into a career as a Police Officer with Avon and Somerset Police. All new police officers will need to complete this programme. The Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship is delivered in partnership with the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol). It offers a route into policing for talented individuals from all backgrounds who can obtain a degree whilst working and earning a full salary.
