Rural Crime – Looking Out For Our Countryside Together

Our rural communities are at the heart of Somerset, and we all have a role to play in keeping them safe. Crimes such as poaching, hare coursing, and the theft of machinery, fuel, or livestock can have a real impact on local farmers, landowners, and residents.

Often, suspicious activity can look completely innocent. A vehicle parked by a field or someone walking dogs across farmland may be there for a legitimate reason, but occasionally it can be linked to criminal activity. That’s why we encourage you to trust your instincts and let us know if something doesn’t seem right.

What to Look Out For

  • Vehicles parked in unusual or remote locations
  • People taking an interest in livestock, machinery, or farm buildings
  • Dogs chasing wildlife or livestock
  • Unauthorised access to fields, farms, or woodland

Why Your Information Matters

Even if it seems minor, your report could provide an important piece of information that helps us identify patterns, prevent crime, and support our farming communities.

If you’re unsure, please report it. We’d rather check and find nothing wrong than miss something important.

How to Report

  • 999 – If a crime is happening now or someone is in immediate danger
  • 101 – For non-emergency incidents or suspicious activity
  • Online: www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/report

Together, we can help protect our countryside and support those who live and work within it. If you see something that doesn’t look right, please let us know.
