Gold home invasion burglaries

We have seen a significant rise in gold-related burglaries across the beat area. Offenders are specifically targeting high-value gold jewellery.

This priority aims to reduce offending, increase community reassurance, and improve vigilance through targeted patrols and proactive home-safety advice.

Current Trends & Modus Operandi

  • Offenders often scope addresses in advance, looking for unoccupied homes.
  • Common entry points: rear doors/windows, patio doors, and properties backing onto footpaths or unlit access routes.
  • Burglaries frequently occur during early evening or when residents are at work.
  • Gold jewellery is targeted due to:
    • High resale value
    • Ease of concealment and transport
    • Cultural practices of storing jewellery within the home rather than banks

Operational Objectives

1. High-Visibility Patrols

  • Increase patrol presence in impacted streets and nearby access routes.
  • Conduct reassurance visits to victims and vulnerable neighbours.
  • Engage with communities most at risk to provide tailored guidance.

Home Safety & Crime Prevention Advice (Community Messaging)

Protecting Gold & High-Value Items

  • Consider storing gold jewellery in a secure safe, ideally insurance-approved and fixed to a solid surface.
  • Avoid leaving jewellery in easily accessible or predictable locations.
  • Photograph valuable items and record serial numbers if available.
  • Mark items using property marking kits where possible.

Securing the Home

  • Ensure all doors and windows are locked, especially rear access points.
  • Fit door chains, window restrictors, and ensure locks meet modern security standards.
  • Install or maintain outdoor lighting, especially motion-activated options around gardens and alleyways.
  • Maintain hedges and fencing to reduce hiding spots.

Surveillance & Alarms

  • Consider installing:
    • CCTV (visible cameras act as a deterrent)
    • Smart doorbells
    • Audible house alarms
  • Ensure CCTV covers access points such as rear gardens, side gates, and sheds.

Community Vigilance

  • Encourage residents to:
    • Report suspicious behaviour or vehicles immediately
    • Join or establish a Neighbourhood Watch group
    • Keep in contact with trusted neighbours, especially when away from home

While Away from Home

  • Use timers on lights to create the appearance of occupancy.
  • Avoid advertising holidays on social media.
  • Ask a neighbour to check the property, move bins, or park a car on the drive.

Engagement & Communications

  • Deliver targeted leaflets to high-risk households.
  • Provide crime prevention briefings at local community centres, mosques, temples, and cultural groups.
  • Use force-approved social media channels to share gold burglary prevention posts.

Desired Outcomes

  • Reduction in gold burglary offences across the beat.
  • Increased intelligence from the community.
  • Improved reassurance and awareness among vulnerable groups.
  • Strengthened partnership working with local neighbourhood groups.
