Reducing Residential Burglary

Priority:
To reduce the risk and impact of residential burglary through prevention, community reassurance, and targeted enforcement.

Statement:
Somerton Neighbourhood Policing Team is committed to protecting homes and families by tackling residential burglary. We understand the emotional and financial harm caused by these offences and are determined to make our communities safer and more resilient.

Our strategy will focus on:

  • Crime Prevention: Promoting practical security measures and awareness campaigns to help residents safeguard their homes, including support for Neighbourhood Watch and property marking schemes.
  • Community Engagement: Building strong relationships with residents to encourage reporting, share intelligence, and increase visibility in areas most at risk.
  • Targeted Patrols and Enforcement: Using crime pattern analysis and intelligence to deploy resources effectively, disrupt offenders, and support investigations.
  • Partnership Working: Collaborating with local authorities, housing providers, and support services to address underlying factors and provide holistic support to victims.

We will continue to listen to our communities and adapt our approach to ensure Somerton remains a safe place to live, with burglary risks actively reduced through proactive policing and community collaboration.

Crime Prevention Advice – How to Reduce the Risk of Residential Burglary

    • Keep doors and windows locked, even when you are at home or spending time in the garden.
    • Use timer switches to make your home look occupied when you are out, especially during darker evenings.
    • Ensure sheds, garages, and outbuildings are securely locked and valuables are kept out of sight.
    • Consider installing security lighting, CCTV, or a video doorbell, which can act as a strong deterrent.
    • Report any suspicious behaviour immediately, no matter how small it may seem.

By taking a few simple precautions and staying alert, we can work together to reduce opportunities for burglars and help keep our community safe.

  • 8 January 2026

We’ve continued to focus on our priority of reducing residential burglary by targeting the small number of prolific offenders responsible for repeated acquisitive crime in our area. Through a combination of intelligence‑led patrols, proactive visits, and close partnership work with investigative teams, we’ve been able to disrupt offending behaviour, identify suspects more quickly, and carry out swift enforcement when needed. Our aim is to protect homes, reassure residents, and ensure those causing the most harm are held to account. We’ll keep working hard to maintain this momentum and keep our communities safe.
