Shoplifting

We have been actively tackling shoplifting through a combination of prevention, engagement, and intelligence-led policing. High-visibility patrols are being conducted in key retail areas to deter offending and provide reassurance to businesses and members of the public. We have encouraged all retailers to report every incident of shoplifting, regardless of the value involved, as this enables us to build a more accurate picture of offending patterns, identify repeat offenders, and highlight the stores most frequently targeted. By working together, we can respond more efficiently to incidents, support retailers, and develop targeted strategies to reduce shoplifting and improve safety within the local business community.

If you are experiencing issues with shoplifting, remember to report these issues to us through the correct channels. You can report:

• By phone
  • Call 999 – for emergencies or if a crime is in progress.
  • Call 101 – for non-emergency situations or to provide information about a crime
• In-person – visit your local Police Stations during their operational hours

  Shoplifting continues to be a significant issue, both locally and across the country. Offenders are becoming increasingly brazen in their behaviour, and the impact of retail theft extends far beyond the financial loss to businesses, affecting staff, customers, and the wider community. We encourage all retailers to report every incident of shoplifting, regardless of the value of the items stolen. Each report helps us build a more comprehensive picture of offending patterns, identify repeat offenders, and understand which businesses are being targeted. This information allows us to focus our efforts where they are most needed, work with businesses to improve security measures, provide crime prevention advice and staff training, and increase our visibility in affected areas to help deter further offences.

  Shoplifting has had a dramatic decline within our area, at this time. It does still occur, however we have had a drastic decline in reports and we are grateful to our community for the support and observations they have provided us.

  However, we still encourage retailers and members of the public to report all shoplifting incidents to us, regardless of the cost of the stolen goods. Every report helps us build a clearer picture of where offences are occurring, identify repeat offenders, understand which businesses are being targeted, and direct patrols to the areas most affected.

  Shoplifting has a significant impact on businesses, staff, and the wider community. It remains a policing priority, and we are committed to working with retailers and partners to prevent offences, identify those responsible, and take appropriate action wherever possible.
