As the clocks go back and daylight hours shorten, we often see a seasonal rise in opportunistic crime. Burglars, thieves, and scammers take advantage of the cover of darkness and quieter streets.
Now is the time to take proactive steps to protect yourself, your property, and your neighbours.
Here are some key tips to help prevent crime during the darker months:
Home security
- Leave a light on when you are out – use timer switches to give the impression someone is home
- Keep doors and windows locked, even when you’re inside
- Secure sheds and garages – these are often targeted for tools and bikes
- Install motion-sensor lighting around entrances and pathways
Vehicle safety
- Remove valuables from your car, including bags, sat navs, and tools
- Park in well-lit areas or secure garages where possible
- Check your locks – make sure your vehicle is properly secured
Personal safety
- Stick to well-lit routes when walking at night
- Stay alert – avoid distractions like phones or headphones
- Let someone know your route and expected arrival time if you’re out alone
Community watch
- Look out for neighbours, especially the elderly or vulnerable
- Report suspicious behaviour to police or anonymously via Crimestoppers
- Join or support local Neighbourhood Watch schemes
In an emergency, always call 999.
For non-emergencies, contact 101 or Report online.
