Stay Safe on the Roads This Winter

Whether you’re cycling, riding a motorcycle, or driving, taking a few minutes to check your vehicle before setting off can help keep you and others safe on the road.

Cycling Safely After Dark

Before setting off on your bicycle, make sure you:

  • Check that your tyres, brakes, lights and reflectors are in good working order.
  • Use front and rear lights when cycling after dark or when visibility is poor.
  • Consider wearing light-coloured, fluorescent or reflective clothing to help you be seen by other road users.
  • Wear a correctly fitted and securely fastened cycle helmet.

Being visible and ensuring your bike is roadworthy can significantly reduce your risk of being involved in a collision.

Vehicle Safety Checks

Drivers are responsible for ensuring their vehicle is safe and roadworthy at all times.

Driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition can result in a fine of up to £2,500, three penalty points on your licence, and in some cases a driving disqualification.

Before every journey, you should check that:

  • Your windscreen, windows and mirrors are clean and provide a clear view of the road.
  • All vehicle lights are working correctly.
  • Your brakes are operating effectively.

Check Your Tyres

Tyres play a vital role in vehicle safety, particularly during wet or icy conditions.

The legal minimum tyre tread depths are:

  • Cars, light vans and light trailers: 1.6mm.
  • Motorcycles, large vehicles and passenger-carrying vehicles: 1mm.
  • Mopeds: Must have visible tread.

The required tread depth must be present across the central three-quarters of the tyre and around its entire circumference.

Regular vehicle maintenance helps keep everyone safe on the road. Taking a few moments to carry out these simple checks before travelling could prevent a collision and potentially save lives.
