Foreign National Registration

As a condition to visit or to stay in the United Kingdom, some foreign nationals are required to register with the police in the area they are living, within 7 days of arrival.

Your UK Entry Clearance Visa, Biometric Residence Permit or British Embassy decision letter will tell you if you need to register or not.

If you do not register when required to do so, you could be fined £5,000 and jailed for 6 months. Late registration can also affect future visa applications.

Registering for the first time

You need to complete the following 2 steps:

Step 1: Register online

Go to the online registration and appointment site to register.

You cannot save your application and come back to it later, so make sure you have all the information you need before you begin.

You will need:

  • your personal details, including contact details and UK address and postcode
  • a family member’s details (if applicable)
  • your passport and Visa/travel details
  • your study or employment details
  • the ability to upload a passport style photograph

When you have completed the registration, you will need to make an appointment to register with us in person.

Step 2: Register in person

You can register as a foreign national at one of the following locations:

At peak times, appointments may be booked up very quickly.

You must bring your:

  • Passport
  • Biometric residence permit (if you have one)
  • UK Visas and Immigration decision letter OR Home Office Atlas email confirming your application for a visa has been successful
  • £34 registration fee in cash

As long as you register online and make an appointment within 7 days of arriving in the UK, the condition to register with us has been met. This applies even if your appointment is longer than 7 days in the future.
