What makes a good police officer?

As a police officer, you will occupy a privileged position, working directly with local communities, ensuring they receive a responsive and outstanding policing service.

Our officers are leaders who make a lasting and positive impact. We celebrate individuality and empower our people to make the right decisions in the moments that matter.

A day in the life of an officer

As a police officer, no two days are ever the same. You will work at the heart of the community, helping people and keeping them safe. When incidents occur, you will attend and take control.

You might spend your day on patrol by foot, bike or car responding to calls from the public or engaging directly with local residents and groups. You will build knowledge of the area you cover, identifying people or places at risk and working to prevent crime before it happens.

On a day-to-day basis, you could be:

  • supporting people affected by crime or anti-social behaviour
  • keeping the peace at events or disputes
  • calming tense situations
  • carrying out interviews
  • taking statements and gathering evidence
  • following legal procedures to build strong case files

Some days may involve making arrests, delivering difficult news or appearing in court to give evidence.

Through it all you will act with professionalism, care and integrity treating people fairly and supporting them through what may be one of the worst days of their life.

What do we need from you?

At Avon and Somerset Police, we expect all officers to follow our standards of professional behaviour for police officers.
