Further arrests as man remains in critical condition after Avonmouth incident last month

Two further arrests have been made in connection with our ongoing investigation into an incident in Avonmouth last month that left one man seriously injured.

Emergency services were called at about 8.30pm on Friday 31 July to an altercation in Richmond Terrace, which left two ship workers requiring hospital treatment.

One of the men was discharged from hospital after receiving medical care, however the other remains in a critical condition in hospital.

The incident has been recorded as a suspected hate crime.

Two people have been charged and appeared in court last week.

• Kurtis Ranklin, 45 and from Southmead, has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent in connection with the man who remains in hospital. He has been remanded to appear at Bristol Crown Court on Friday 4 September.
• A 17-year-old male has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in relation to the man who has been discharged from hospital. He cannot be identified legally as he is not an adult and will next be in court on the same day as Ranklin.

Four other people have been arrested during the course of our enquiries:

• A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder on 31 July. He remains on conditional bail.
• A 38-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender the following day. She remains on conditional bail.
• An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder yesterday (Thursday 13 August). He has been released on conditional bail.
• Earlier today (Friday 14 August), a 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and he has also been released on conditional bail.

Acting Detective Inspector Kate Bettel, of the Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “Six arrests have been made as part of our enquiries, and that has led to two of those people being charged and appearing in court.

“We know this incident has left people in the area shocked and we wish to reassure them that our investigation is progressing. We will continue to provide key updates to make sure the public remain informed throughout the course of our enquiries.

“At the centre of this investigation there is a man who remains critically ill in hospital, and we are doing all we can to provide his family with as much information as we can about what happened.

“Given the seriousness of the injuries sustained, the support of the community to our investigation continues to be invaluable and we would continue to ask anyone with information to come forward, either directly to us or anonymously to Crimestoppers.”
