Police chiefs call on PM to prevent PC Harper killers release

Fifty policing and law enforcement leaders from across the UK have jointly written to the Prime Minister calling for him to prevent the early release of PC Andrew Harper’s killers.

The open letter, published yesterday evening, also calls for stronger protections for victims and communities when release arrangements change. The letter can read on the National Police Chiefs’ Council website.

Chief Constable Sarah Crew is one of the 50 signatories of the letter.

She added: “The proposed early release of those responsible for the death of PC Andrew Harper has caused profound concern across policing, and I share that concern.

“This case matters deeply to police officers and staff because Andrew Harper was killed while protecting the public and serving his community.

“The strength of feeling across policing reflects not only the tragic loss of Andrew’s life, but wider concerns about victims, public confidence in justice and whether the sacrifices made by those who serve are properly recognised.

“I recognise the significant pressures facing the prison system and the difficult decisions that Government must make. However, the consequences of those pressures cannot simply be felt by victims, bereaved families, communities and those who dedicate their lives to protecting them.

“I understand why officers and staff feel so strongly about this case. Every day they support victims through trauma, stand alongside grieving families and ask communities to have confidence in the justice system. They are entitled to expect that those experiences and perspectives are heard.

“I believe it is right that every lawful option is explored and that the principles underpinning Harper’s Law are protected.

“Future sentencing and release arrangements should properly reflect the impact on victims, bereaved families, public protection and the emergency workers who serve and protect our communities.

“This is about more than one case. It is about fairness, justice, public confidence and demonstrating that the courage, sacrifice and service of police officers, staff and all emergency workers are valued.

“I stand firmly with our workforce, with victims and with Andrew Harper’s family.”
